E-Mail From Kevin, March 17, 2003

Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 14:07:24 GMT

Sawatdi Khup, Greetings from Bangkok. Leslie & I arrived safely & have been spending the last 12 days ‘moving in’. We have our own phone line as of today, so I am sending off this short e-mail to let you know we are doing well.

It has been intense getting acclimated to such a foreign culture while at the same time preparing to become teachers for the first time. Leslie just completed a week of training with a Thai professor whose expertise is in Christian Montessori. I attend a seminar next week for teaching math, science, & English.

Bangkok is hard to describe, but over the next few years (God willing) I will try to do it justice. We are going to catch a bus tomorrow for Ban Phe where we hope to catch a ferry or fishing boat to Ko Samet. It is an island which is part of the Thai national park system. For 120 baht ($3.00) a bus will take you the three hours to Ban Phe. On Ko Samet, for $12.00/night you can stay in a bungalow on the beach. It is basically a grass hut with a mattress & mosquito netting but sounds like the Ritz Carlton to us.

As Bangkok is so crowded & polluted, any chance we have to get out of the city, we’ll take it. Other than a break in early May we work straight thru to Oct. We hope you all find the time to drop us a line now & again & we will do the same. I pray you are all doing well.

I miss you all…………..Peace, Kevin

Ko Samet Island, March 20, 2003
After the stress of packing, moving, and settling-in; and adjusting to the intense
tropical heat, pollution, and traffic of Bankok; Kevin & Leslie took a much
needed break from the chaos with a visit to Ko Samet Island.

About Ko Samet Island
Ko Samet Island is located 30 minutes or 6.5 kilometers off the coast or Ban Phe. Ban Phe is a coastal town, which is about a 3 hour bus ride from Bankok. Ko Samet Island offers beautiful beaches with charming white sand and strange-shaped rocks, suitable for relaxation. The climate is always pleasantly cool with abundant rains in August and windy monsoons in May.
